Each Monday children do a trip up to the local super market. This trip allows children to make their own choices on weekly snacks and which ones they would like.
Children are able to access the community in a safe way as they all wear The Little Lotus hi-vis vests and hold onto the walking rope. All the way staff talk to children about road safety and once we reach the road children have now learnt not to step onto it without looking for cars or pressing the button to allow the lights to change for us to cross.
Children are also gaining an understanding of shops and supermarkets and how you need to buy things using money from the shop. Each time a child will help to pay for the shopping and pack it away to allow a deeper understanding of real life.
We have trips to the local library and walks in the community. We also visit a care home. The children interact with the elderly and the relationship is fantastic.
There are a number of benefits from this interaction including; the residents teaching valuable life lessons, children respecting their elders and both generations are entertained.
We celebrate a range of religious celebrations which again involves visits to the community such as the Gurdwara, Cathedral and the Hindu temple. We also like to take the children to Fenwick’s window at Christmas time.
